Instructions for using KATO CT11000 & CT11001 Series Front End Assembly for Tanged Air Tools

Printable Version

KATO® air tool front end assemblies provide smooth and rapid installation of Tanged CoilThread® inserts when used with KATO or HeliCoil® brand air motors.

Front End Assembly consists of:

  1. Prewinder

  2. Mandrel

  3. Spacers for installing 1, 1-1/2, or 2 diameter length inserts

Assembly instructions:

  1. If you are using the optional clutch-drive (required for 2-56 & 4-40 tangless, strongly recommended for all sizes up to ¼”) replace the standard drive sleeve with the clutch-drive and external spacer. (see figure 1)  to set the torque on the clutch drive please review the clutch-drive setup instructions.
  1. Place the appropriate depth control spacer over the mandrel for the insert length to be installed.  The insert lengths are marked on the spacers (1, 1-1/2, or 2 diameter).
  1. Screw the mandrel assembly with the spacer all the way through the prewinder assembly until it disengages from the prewinder thread.  This is critical to prevent the mandrel from bending when the retainer nut is tightened.
  1. Assemble the front-end assembly on to the air motor adapter using the retainer nut (left hand thread), making sure that the mandrel pin is inserted into the drive sleeve key-way.
  1. Connect the air motor to a filter-regulator-lubricator air supply and set the pressure as indicated on the prewinder assembly.  Exceeding the recommended pressure may damage the mandrel or shorten the tool life.
  1. With the mandrel retracted, insert the plastic strip through the prewinder slot or load the bulk insert into the well with the tang end facing the end of the prewinder.
  1. Actuate the air motor and install the insert into the tapped hole.  Measure the assembled insert installation depth.

Any additional adjustments to the depth can be made by adding or removing shims. Disassemble the front end assembly and add or remove the shims as required.  Be sure the mandrel is all the way through the prewinder, and disengaged from the prewinder thread before disassembling.  Repeat steps 2-7 until the desired depth is achieved.

Maintenance Tips:

  1.  Lubricate the front and rear prewinder assembly threads, the adapter drive sleeve and key-way with grease for smoother operation and longer tool life.

  2.  Use the lowest air pressure that will install the insert.  This will also prolong the tool life.
