Setting and Installing the Clutch-Drive Assembly:

Before using the Clutch-Drive Assembly (patent pending) the torque must be set to the appropriate setting for each particular application.  To set the torque, follow the steps below:

  1. Using a standard adjustable wrench, place the wrench over the locknut and against the washer.
  2. Push down on the washer while turning the wrench.  This will disengage the washer from the lock nut.
  3. Tighten the locknut (turn clockwise) to increase the clutch torque, loosen the locknut (turn counter-clockwise) to reduce the torque.
  4. Setting the Clutch to the minimum torque that will install the insert, without declutching, will protect the Mandrel from breaking if resistance is encountered during installation.  It will also increase the wear life of the Mandrel.  After adjusting the torque in step 3, the adjustment can be checked using the small crank/wrench included with the clutch.  Attach the crank to the end of the Clutch Drive.  Assemble the Clutch Drive, Adapter, and Front End Assembly, but do not attach to the Air Motor.  Using the Crank, test the complete assembly by installing an insert by hand.  If the Clutch slips, repeat Step 2 & 3 and increase the torque.
  5. Repeat steps 2, 3 & 4 until minimum amount of torque to install the insert is reached.  It may take several adjustments to obtain the correct torque setting.  However, once set it will not be necessary to make further adjustments unless the insert size/length or Front End Assembly is changed.
  6.  Once the minimal torque for installing the inserts by hand is obtained, increase the setting by turning the locknut approximately 90°.  The additional increase will compensate for the momentum of the mandrel during powered installation.

Installing the Clutch-Drive:

  1. Remove the standard drive sleeve from inside the Adapter.
  2. Install the Clutch-Drive Assembly inside the air motor.
  3. Thread the External Spacer (left-hand threads) into the air motor (Cooper/Gardner Denver Air Motors Only).
  4. Thread the Adapter housing into the external spacer (for the Cooper/Gardner Denver), or into the air motor (for the ARO).
  5. Follow the directions in the Front End Assembly Instructions to assemble the remaining components.
