Adjust the stop collar for the insert length and installation depth.  Locate the collar on the mandrel so as to contact the body of the prewinder when the mandrel projects a distance equal to (approximately) the insert length plus 1/2 pitch.

Pull the mandrel to the back of the prewinder and place the insert into this well with the tang toward the tool tip.

Rotate the mandrel until the mandrel tip engages the insert tang. Continue to rotate mandrel until the insert projects beyond the tool tip 1-2 turns.

Place the tool against the tapped hole and rotate the mandrel until the stop collar contacts the body of the prewinder.

Retract the mandrel.  Check installation for proper depth and readjust the stop collar if necessary.
